This series is part of my ongoing explorations into how quilt patterns come apart during the process of making. My favorite quilts have always been scrappy quilts, made of bits and ends of different fabric, with lots of colors and patterns that don’t quite line up. Quilts that are made because you need a blanket, but you don’t have enough of any one color and the colors you do have aren’t quite the right shapes for the pattern you want to make. I love seeing how people stretch a triangle to make a pattern fit, or add a contrasting color when a square is a little short. I love the problem solving and ingenuity that comes from making something beautiful out of what you have, and embracing imperfections as an innate part of making.

The frames are made in collaboration with Julian Hansen, in response to the drawings. The decorative geometric shapes are made using the splines of the frame, repurposing a structural component into something decorative, much like the patterns in pieced quilts.
